What is the difference between convection and drafts?

If you feel like your new energy efficient windows are drafty, you may be mistaken. In many instances what feels like a draft is just convection at work. Convection is the process by which heated air from your ductwork flows through the home and reaches the window, pushing cold air off the window’s surface and down toward the floor. Convection is actually a sign that your energy efficient windows are working as they should be. To reduce any draft you may feel from convection, experts advise that you keep your blinds or window treatments open ΒΌ of an inch, which will allow the heated air to reach the glass. Also, you should be certain that your heat registers are not blocked by couches, big screen TVs, or other furnishings.
