Home Maintenance Checklist for August

Aug 07, 2013 No Comments by

At this time of year, no one wants to tackle projects outside in the sweltering heat and sun, so now is a great time to take care of tasks inside. Moreover, many families go on vacation this month, and it’s important to make sure your home is secure before leaving.

August has one of the highest rates of residential burglaries of any month, because burglars know that a huge number of houses will be vacant while the owners are on vacation. To protect your home, install deadbolts if you don’t have them. Consider installing a home security system, since homes without alarms are two to three times more likely to be broken into.

Another easy chore to check off your list is replacing your washing machine hoses. State Farm reports that leaking washer hoses cause $170 million in damage every year. Leaks often occur when the hose becomes brittle after three to five years, so make sure you aren’t coming home to a house full of water after vacation—replace the hose beforehand!

If you haven’t done so already, make sure to replace or clean your air conditioner filter. In August, you will probably be turning on the A/C frequently, and you don’t want to disperse dirt in the air indoors. Plus, pulling in air through a dirty filter requires more energy and therefore can make your bill even higher. You should clean or swap out the old filter every month or two—and possibly more often if your household includes furry pets.
