How to Easily Select the Best Home Security Company

It’s one thing to have a home security system and quite another to have a quality home security system. The police know this. That’s why in many cities and towns, fines are levied if a homeowner has an excessive number of false alarms.

So how can you avoid getting on the bad side of the police, not to mention save yourself a lot of aggravation? Experts say that to do so, it is important to start off by considering at least five different local home security companies to compare costs and services before making a decision.

Ahead of contacting these companies, research how long they have been in business and whether they have a history of professional performance and dependability. On the first call, find out if they are members of their state’s burglar & fire alarm association, and ask if they are willing to individually appraise your security needs, offer suggestions and provide a written proposal that includes their recommendations. Make sure that in that in the proposal all costs are going to be itemized, from components and installation to service.

Another good idea is to get references from each of the security companies you are considering and contact these customers to get their opinion of the system and service they have received from the company. If the alarm company is reluctant to give you these contacts, then that itself speaks to their level of professionalism.

Once you have narrowed your selections down to two or three companies, it’s time to further vet your choices. Specifically, you want to find out if the security system company has insurance to cover the cost of repairing any damage they might cause during the installation of the system, whether the company and its installers are properly licensed and bonded and whether they subcontract anything out (i.e. installation, service, monitoring).

Other questions to ask include where the central monitoring station is located and whether the security system itself is U/L approved, which is the sign of a quality product. Also, you’ll want to investigate if the alarm company offers a written guarantee, how long that guarantee is good for and what exactly it covers in terms of parts and labor.

After doing this due diligence, you should have a pretty good idea of which security system company you want to hire and feel confident that your choice is a safe one.
